I’m an entrepreneur, and in my early twenties, I thought that meant coming up with new ideas. I finally realized that it’s much easier to start with a problem: if your idea doesn’t clearly solve a problem, it’s going to be an uphill battle.

In 2020, I co-founded an investment newsletter called Ticker Nerd, which grew quickly and was quickly acquired. I attribute most of my company’s success to validating the idea on Reddit early on. And it wasn’t a one-off business: other small online businesses I’ve started have also seen similar success, leveraging Reddit and other organic channels for validation and early growth.

Here, I’ll share how I identify problems worth solving, then quickly test whether my solution is workable—and how you can do the same.

Business ideas are fun (and often simple), but without a validated problem and an appropriate solution, an idea is doomed to failure. All successful companies really do is solve problems big enough for an audience willing to pay.

The perfect example of this is. Here’s the problem: Business owners, marketers, and other digital professionals struggle to get information from one software to another. Unless they can write APIs or have a team that can do the technical work, it’s something they just can’t do. And even if they have a team to help, it’s expensive and time consuming.

Solves this by providing thousands of ready-to-use connections between popular business applications. It’s economical, easy to use and reliable. It’s also a cool idea.

Not all problems are of equal value, so it’s equally important to identify which ones are worth solving. To increase your chances of business success, ask yourself the following three questions before deciding to solve a problem:

For example, you might find that email marketers struggle to generate subject lines. And because subject lines can make or break an email campaign, marketers often spend hours rewriting them. A solution to this problem could be an AI-powered tool that generates subject lines based on email content. But if you’ve never written any code or managed a team of developers, you’re probably not equipped to solve the problem.

This is exactly why Copy AI and Jasper grew exponentially faster than their long list of competitors. They were solving a big problem for an audience willing to pay – and they were well equipped to do it with technical expertise and funding.

Because the internet is full of information (most of it terrible, some of it amazing), it can be used to find problems that potential customers are having. Here are the four ways I’ve found the most helpful for spotting problems.

Customers who leave negative reviews feel strongly about their experience and often include a lot of detail. This is valuable information for anyone trying to find a problem worth solving. The jewelry is in 1-3 star reviews – head over to Amazon and check it out.

Here is an example: disposable face masks for beauty are wasteful and expensive. Sounds like a solid problem. Maybe it could be solved with reusable silicone face masks? An easy way to test this hypothesis is to read reviews of existing silicone face masks.

Check out this level of detail. We’ve found that people don’t like the silicone face mask experience because it’s uncomfortable and there are issues with the fit. People can even use them to keep disposable masks in place – in fact, they don’t replace them. This could be an opportunity to improve the product or switch to something else.

People are passionate about their hobbies and share every detail in Facebook groups. This makes it a great place to identify issues they are experiencing.

For example, if you go to a deep sea fishing group on Facebook, you’ll probably see them talking about how they often get hit by boats and jet skis (since the fishermen wear camouflage wetsuits and the buoys they use are well away from them, no is uncommon). This is a big problem that spearfishermen are likely to pay good money to solve, and it’s definitely not an idea you come up with during a brainstorming session.

Speaking of niches, the subreddit’s active members are a truly passionate audience. Tools like Subreddit Stats are built specifically to analyze subreddit data such as a subreddit’s growth, what other subreddit users are active and frequent keywords.

You can see that the r/Blogging subreddit has seen a steady increase over the last couple of years, which is great: big growth spurts aren’t always a good sign because they can destroy the quality of posts on the subreddit. This year’s best entries are also quite interesting. From a user earning their first dollar to another user reaching 100,000 visits, the issues these users face are likely to be different.

By analyzing the top keywords on the subreddit, you can start to make some predictions about the kind of issues r/Blogging members are facing.

At first glance, you might assume that non-technical and inconsistent bloggers struggle to monetize their blogs. This seems like a big problem to deal with, especially if the reason people start a blog is to eventually make money from it. From there, you can read multiple posts to get a deeper insight.

Ticker Nerd was built to scratch my own itch. My business partner sent me a huge amount of stock information. I couldn’t keep up and thought there must be a more efficient way to stay on the stock exchange. We made a quick phone call to discuss the problem.

We decided we could solve this by seeing stock trends (via social mentions). We then performed sentiment analysis to find out what the internet was saying, rather than searching Reddit and Twitter. The solution has evolved over time, but it fixed a genuine issue I was having.

Once you’ve found a problem that you think is worth solving, it’s usually easy to identify a workable solution. Conducting user interviews is a great way to find out if the problem and solution fit together – I used Userbrain and UserTesting to make the process easier. But my favorite way to validate a solution is via Reddit.

Of course, the easiest way to tell if your customers want your solution is to pay for it. With a landing page and the right Reddit posts, you can make it happen.

Note: Reddit moderators have a very low tolerance for spam. This means you need a decent legacy Reddit account and need to – for your sake and that of other Redditors – follow the subreddit’s guidelines correctly.

I use Carrd or Webflow, but any landing page builder will do the trick. The goal is to pre-sell a limited amount of your product. Logos, branding, font, things like that – not important right now. Don’t get hung up on the little things.

Make sure the copy is convincing. If you are a novice copywriter, use the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) method. You want as many people viewing your landing page as possible to take an action, so focus on calls to action (CTAs).

I use Gumroad, but you can choose any platform that allows you to start taking payments. Enter an advance or pre-order price under $100. This will be the sweet spot – anything more and people will hesitate to pay.

One way to find relevant subreddits is through a tool called Anvaka. The goal is to identify where your prospects are most active, find the posts that perform well, and replicate them.

Using the tool, you can see that members of the r/Blogging subreddit are also active in r/opywriting, r/juststart, r/content_marketing, r/SEO, and more. These are all subreddits you should be posting on.

You can click on any of the subreddits and rank the top posts of all time. This will give you an indicator of how valuable your post should be.

Avoid reposting the same post in every group and make sure you follow the subreddit rules or your post will be removed. It’s also better to post a
