The report breaks down labor market data and forecasts which specific occupations will be most in demand in the Greater Toronto Area by 2019. It lists the top 100 jobs in high demand, and also breaks down the estimated jobs in York, Durham, Halton and Peel regions.

In all regions, including Toronto, retailers lead the list, while financial auditors and accountants, administrative assistants and retail and wholesale managers, and elementary and kindergarten teachers round out the top five.
However, the report cautions that the data only reflects the demand side of the labor market and does not look at the supply side, such as who is qualified to work in each occupation.
For example, although approximately 7,000 elementary and kindergarten teachers need to fill new positions to replace retiring teachers, this number does not reflect anecdotal evidence that the Toronto area already has a teacher surplus.
“This means that finding a job as a teacher in the Toronto area may still prove challenging,” the report says, acknowledging that it would be unwise to encourage current students to follow that path.

In-demand occupations include registered nurses, doctors, lawyers and senior managers in financial services, as well as food counter staff, custodians, cleaners and cashiers. Middle-income occupations include office workers, sales managers and human resource professionals.
McIsaac said the job forecast is promising, but the big question is whether it creates opportunities for everyone, including young people and newcomers, two groups with high unemployment rates.
“It is great that we have new jobs on the horizon. “I hope that these numbers will be permanent, full-time, secure jobs, and that many of these opportunities will be available to some of the most vulnerable people in the community,” she said.
But MacIsaac pointed to innovative programs that often start at the grassroots with support from educational institutions to help people get their first jobs.
